Some great postings here from Mr. Saxton. He has very well explained a number of things and clarified them, such as the breaches and cartridges used, the bag charge in front. This guy has done a lot of homework!

As far as I know, it was hydrophones, on both the Prinz and Bismarck (also Tirpitz). My impression is that the Prinz had more of them then the battleships. I assumed that this was sort of like pre-sonar, or the forerunner to it.
